Hello,

First of all, you need to check out if it is the hydraulic charge switch. See www.jag-lovers.org at the end of the page, online books, then XJ40. It is on paragraph 7.3. (direct link: www.jag-lovers.org/modern/book_susp-brakes.html#7.3

If it is the switch, you can replace the switch with the expensive Jaguar part, or...

Suco, a German producer of hydraulic switches, sells an adjustable switch, part nr. : 0169 420 043016, this switch is sold in Belgium for 13$. You can check the website, www.suco.de for a contact phonenumber, they have selling points all over the world. Then you have one problem left, the original switch has a connection M16x1.5, the suco switch is 1/8 NPT, so you need an adapter. I found this the first time in an hydraulic workshop, in 3 pieces, from M16x1.5 to 1/4BSP then from 1/4BSP to 1/8 BSP and then from 1/8 BSP to 1/8NPT. Later I found a better solution. Autometer, the ones who sells gauges for in the car, sells an adapter for this. The number of the piece is 2268 you can find this adapter in any shop who sells the Autometer gauges, if they don't have it, they can order it. If you want to see an example, see www.rpmoutlet.com/autoaccess.htm (almost at the end of the page). After installing, you only need to adjust the pressure switch with a small screwdriver. Turn the adjustment screw in until the pulsing begins (the overpressure valve opens, that is the pulsing), then turn the adjustment screw about 1 turn back out.

Problem solved! If you have more questions about this matter, don't hesitate to ask.

If you're happy afterwards, whats left over of the 50$, (depending on where you bought the pieces, can be something between 15 and 25$), feel free to donate to a poor mechanic like me!

Kind regards,

Frank
